On the search for bara chirashi

A few weeks ago, I suddenly developed this craving for bara chirashi. Now my all-time favourite is actually the aburi chirashi from Sun with Moon, but it costs like $30++ a bowl, and I didn’t want to spend that kind of money. So I asked for recommendations on FB, and also did some research online – found 2 places.

Sumiya is a restaurant on the highest level of Orchard Central (that’s the building right across from OG Orchard), next to Orchard Gateway. It’s apparently mainly a charcoal grill izakaya-styled dining establishment but it also serves seafood rice bowls for lunch daily.

They have this mix bara kaisen don ($18.80++) which comes with a salad, appetizer, miso soup, pickles, chawanmushi and a mochi dessert. Very good value I’d say! They use a mix of tuna, swordfish and salmon sashimi cubes, avocado, ikura and tobiko. I opted out for the tuna because I don’t like how it looks (it’s too red for me, LOL). It was my first time trying swordfish sashimi, and I don’t think I really like it either. The texture is too hard and crunchy for me. So I only managed a couple of swordfish cubes before giving them up to ZH.

On FB, one of my friends recommended Hanare Cafe – which also came up in my online search. So I happened to be in the area last Friday night and my initial choice of dining place was crowded with a long queue. We passed by Hanare earlier and thought it might be a good time to try it now (since we are hardly in Tanjong Pagar). Thankfully it wasn’t crowded when we arrived (but it sure got busy 10 minutes after we got seated down).

We all got ourselves a bara chirashi set ($17.80 nett) and it comes with free flow of 4 side dishes (edamame, salad, fried salmon bones, carrot and daikon stew). Hot and cold green tea were also complimentary.

The bara chirashi at Hanare comes with salmon, tuna, swordfish, shellfish, scallops and ikura. So this time, I customized my meal – only salmon and scallops please! The scallops were so so sweet, and there were lots of salmon. I have read online from others that the serving is quite a lot though it looks small, and it’s true! I couldn’t finish my rice bowl! A really good deal, and I’m definitely going back!
